Injections and IV cannulation
IV, IM and SC medication administration is carried out according to the physician’s prescription. Where IV cannulation is requested, the nurse checks the instruction and available supplies before beginning. The family should not ask the nurse to substitute medication, change the dose or continue an infusion beyond the ordered plan.
IV fluids and saline therapy
IV fluid or saline support for a prescribed purpose, such as physician-managed dehydration, requires the correct fluid, rate and monitoring plan. The nurse can set up and observe the prescribed infusion but does not determine whether dehydration is present or whether a patient should be admitted to hospital.
Vitals and Random Blood Sugar
The visit can include blood pressure, pulse and Random Blood Sugar checks when requested. Results are shared with the patient or family for the treating clinician. A single reading is not a diagnosis, and unusual results or concerning symptoms should be escalated according to the doctor’s advice.
